PESHAWAR: A total of 1,500 native plants representing 18 species have been planted at Swati Phattak near Riaz Shaheed Colony, Peshawar, as part of an initiative to develop a Miyawaki urban forest and strengthen climate resilience in the city.
The plantation activity was organised under the OGDCL Climate Resilient Urban Forests Initiative in collaboration with OGDCL, EcoNexus, IMSciences and the Cantonment Board Peshawar.
GYM Club IMSciences participated in the activity along with students, volunteers and representatives of partner organisations.
The event was attended by Station Commander Brigadier Ghafar, Director IMSciences Dr Usman Ghani, former squash player Jansher Khan, and Director Horticulture and Associate Professor at the University of Agriculture Peshawar Dr Masood Ahmad.
The plantation also brought together Dr Rehman and his team from Jinnah Medical College, students of Cantt Boys School, members and volunteers of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society KP Branch, and volunteers from the Green Youth Movement Club of IMSciences.

Organisers said the use of native plant species and the Miyawaki approach would help create a dense urban green space in the heart of Peshawar. Urban forests can provide shade, support biodiversity and help improve local environmental conditions.
The initiative also aims to promote greater community participation in urban plantation and climate action, particularly among students and young volunteers.
Organisers expressed appreciation for the participating institutions, volunteers and partners, as well as OGDCL CEO/MD Ahmad Hayat Lak for supporting the initiative.
The plantation drive highlights the role of urban forests in creating greener and more climate-resilient cities. With proper maintenance and long-term care, the newly planted trees can contribute to cleaner air, cooler neighbourhoods and healthier urban spaces for future generations.
