Rahim Yar Khan: Fishermen rescued a rare river dolphin after it became trapped in a fishing net in the River Chenab and safely released it back into the water.
A video of the incident, reportedly recorded by a passer-by on a mobile phone, later went viral on social media.
According to local sources, the fishermen were fishing as usual when the dolphin became entangled in their net. They carefully freed the animal and returned it to the river without harming it.
Sources said the dolphin was more than four maunds in weight and around six feet long. These details could not be independently verified.
River dolphins are rare aquatic mammals and face threats from accidental entanglement in fishing gear, habitat degradation and other human activities. Their protection is important for maintaining healthy river ecosystems.
The fishermen’s decision to free the trapped dolphin instead of harming it has been welcomed by wildlife and environmental observers. Such responsible action can help protect threatened aquatic species and support the conservation of Pakistan’s river biodiversity.
