MANSEHRA: Divisional Forest Officer Zohaib Hassan of the Patrol Squad, Upper Hazara Forest Circle, held a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Mansehra on September 25 to discuss measures to prevent illegal extraction, transportation and smuggling of timber and other forest produce.
During the meeting, Hassan briefed the Deputy Commissioner on operational challenges faced by the Forest Department in dealing with habitual offenders and organised groups involved in the illegal movement of forest resources.
He stressed the need for stronger action against repeat offenders and highlighted the importance of initiating appropriate proceedings under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) framework against habitual and persistent forest offenders, where legally applicable.
The meeting also discussed action for the confiscation of vehicles allegedly used to transport illegally harvested timber and other forest produce.
Officials emphasised stronger coordination between the District Administration, Forest Department, Police and other relevant enforcement agencies. Improved coordination would help authorities monitor vulnerable routes, share information quickly and conduct joint enforcement operations against illegal forest activities.
Effective action against illegal timber extraction is important for protecting forests, biodiversity and the wider environmental health of the Hazara region. Forests also help regulate local water systems, reduce soil erosion and provide habitat for wildlife.
The meeting highlighted the need for continued surveillance and coordinated enforcement to protect forest resources and strengthen long-term forest conservation in the region.
