NDMA Issues Rain Alert for Potohar Region and Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

ISLAMABAD, September 14, 2026: The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert, warning of heavy thunderstorms and rainfall across the Potohar region and parts of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from September 14 to 17.

According to the alert, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Murree, the Galiyat and adjoining mountainous areas.

The anticipated rainfall may trigger localised flooding in low-lying areas, urban locations and along streams and nullahs. The risk could be particularly high in areas with inadequate drainage or where intense rainfall occurs over a short period.

In upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rainfall is expected in Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Peshawar and adjoining areas.

The NEOC’s assessment models indicate the possibility of intense rainfall over short periods due to the development of a sudden weather system. In mountainous areas, heavy rainfall could increase water flows in local streams and nullahs and raise the risk of flash flooding and landslides.

The NDMA has advised the public to stay away from low-lying areas, streams, nullahs and waterways during heavy rainfall and avoid unnecessary travel.

People living in vulnerable and mountainous areas have also been urged to remain alert to the possibility of flooding and landslides and follow the latest weather and emergency advisories issued by local administrations, the Pakistan Meteorological Department and NDMA.

The public has been encouraged to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for verified weather information, potential hazard updates and recommended precautionary measures.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to minimise risks during the expected period of heavy rainfall.
