JHELUM: The District Administration Jhelum and Beaconhouse School System have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to plant 100,000 saplings across the district as part of the Punjab government’s “Green Punjab” vision and the district administration’s “Green Jhelum, Green Punjab” initiative.
The plantation drive aims to expand green cover across Jhelum while encouraging students and local communities to actively participate in environmental conservation.
Under the initiative, students and citizens will be encouraged not only to plant saplings but also to take responsibility for their care, watering and protection, with the aim of ensuring that newly planted trees survive and contribute to the district’s long-term environmental health.
The partnership is expected to strengthen public participation in plantation activities and raise awareness among young people about the importance of trees, green spaces and environmental stewardship.
Officials said collective efforts by government institutions, educational organisations, students and citizens would help accelerate efforts to make Jhelum a greener, cleaner and more environmentally friendly district.
The initiative also highlights the growing importance of community-led tree plantation as Pakistan faces rising temperatures, extreme weather and other impacts associated with climate change.
For the plantation target to deliver lasting environmental benefits, experts stress that post-plantation monitoring and maintenance will be as important as the initial planting itself.
The Jhelum initiative is being implemented under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the “Green Jhelum, Green Punjab” programme of Deputy Commissioner Jhelum Mir Raza Ozgen.
