LAHORE: Lahore has improved to the 16th position on the global air pollution index as the Punjab government intensifies preparations to control smog ahead of the upcoming season.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to strengthen anti-smog measures and prevent further deterioration in air quality, with the smog season expected to begin in November.
Officials and environmental experts said air quality in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rahim Yar Khan and other parts of Punjab can fluctuate significantly depending on wind direction, wind speed and humidity. Air masses moving from neighbouring India can also influence pollution levels across the province.
Meteorological experts have forecast rain in Lahore next week, which could temporarily improve air quality by helping remove pollutants and particulate matter from the atmosphere.
The Punjab government has also expanded measures introduced during last year’s anti-smog campaign. Relevant departments have been directed to ensure strict implementation of prescribed standard operating procedures across the province.
The chief minister has ordered authorities to prevent the burning of crop residue and encourage farmers to use modern agricultural machinery for its management and disposal. Action has also been directed against the burning of plastic and other activities that produce harmful smoke and emissions.
Meanwhile, monitoring of brick kilns has been intensified across Punjab. Authorities are accelerating action against kilns that have failed to adopt zigzag technology, which can significantly reduce emissions compared with conventional kiln operations.
Officials said coordinated enforcement, better agricultural practices, industrial compliance and timely weather monitoring will remain critical to controlling air pollution as Punjab approaches the peak smog season.
The renewed campaign reflects the province’s efforts to address multiple sources of air pollution and improve air quality before winter conditions contribute to the accumulation of smog across major urban centres.
