ISLAMABAD: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC), Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by expanding tree plantation, landscaping and ecosystem restoration initiatives across the country.
Marking National Tree Plantation Day, the company said its greening initiatives are being implemented at operational field sites and offices under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) programmes.
Earlier this year, OGDC contributed 20,000 trees to the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Spring Tree Plantation Campaign at Shakarparian National Park in Islamabad. The company has also partnered with the CDA on landscaping and plantation initiatives at various locations across the capital.
The company’s environmental initiatives extend beyond Islamabad. According to its 2025 ESG Report, OGDC planted more than 3,000 trees at the Qadirpur Gas Field, including 800 trees under the Miyawaki forest model.
More than 4,500 native plants were also introduced around the Nashpa-04 field, camp and biosite areas to support biodiversity, carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration.
Nationwide Plantation Drive
OGDC also launched a nationwide tree plantation drive in 2025, beginning with the plantation of 1,017 mango trees and 200 date palms at its Multan Regional Office.
The company subsequently designated 100 acres at its Dhodak and Kot Addu sites for further plantation activities, reflecting its efforts to integrate environmental restoration into its operational footprint.
OGDC said environmental stewardship forms an important part of its broader sustainability strategy, which includes reforestation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and measures to reduce its ecological footprint.
The company has also highlighted initiatives such as solar-powered water pumping and emission-control measures as part of its environmental management programme.
Linking Energy Development with Environmental Responsibility
Established in 1961 and converted into a public limited company in 1997, OGDC plays a major role in Pakistan’s domestic oil and gas sector.
The company says it currently contributes approximately 49% of Pakistan’s oil production, 28% of gas production and 34% of LPG production.
According to its annual report, OGDC’s exploration portfolio covered 99,287 square kilometres as of June 2025, representing around 40% of Pakistan’s total area under exploration.
Through its plantation, biodiversity and ecosystem restoration programmes, OGDC is seeking to complement its energy operations with measures aimed at improving green cover, supporting native biodiversity and strengthening environmental resilience across its areas of operation.
