1,500km on 3kg Hydrogen: NIPPON HEV Unveils Next-Generation Green Car

LAHORE: NIPPON Energy, operating under the NIPPON HEV brand, has attracted attention in Pakistan with the unveiling of a hydrogen-powered car and motorcycle ecosystem featuring a home-based hydrogen production concept using solar-powered electrolysis.

The company claims its hydrogen-powered car can travel up to 1,500 kilometres on a 3kg hydrogen cylinder, in addition to a battery-only range of up to 300km.

Priced at PKR 2.499 million (Rs2.5 million), the vehicle is being promoted as a potential green transport solution combining electric mobility with hydrogen technology.

NIPPON HEV Hydrogen Car: Key Specifications

Feature Claimed Specification

Electric motor 30 kW
Top speed 80–90 km/h
Battery-only range Up to 300 km
Hydrogen cylinder 3 kg
Hydrogen range Up to 1,500 km
Combined range Up to 1,800 km

According to NIPPON Energy, the vehicle is powered by a 30kW electric motor and uses a 3kg hydrogen cylinder. The company claims an efficiency of approximately 500km per kilogram of hydrogen.

Home Hydrogen Production

One of the most notable features promoted by NIPPON is its proposed home-based hydrogen refuelling system.

The company says the system uses solar-powered electrolysis to produce hydrogen from water. NIPPON claims the setup can generate approximately 3 litres of hydrogen per minute, allowing users to produce hydrogen at home for vehicle refuelling.

The company has also claimed that the vehicle’s hydrogen cylinder can be refilled at home using high-pressure equipment, although the precise refuelling time and the technical requirements of the system would require independent verification.

Strong Initial Market Interest

NIPPON Energy also claims that the unveiling generated significant consumer interest, with more than 1,200 car bookings and 8,000 motorcycle bookings reportedly received on the first day.

The company’s hydrogen-electric concept comes as Pakistan explores cleaner alternatives for road transportation amid concerns over fuel imports, urban air pollution and transport-related emissions.

Green Transport Potential

The introduction of hydrogen technology alongside battery-electric mobility could potentially add another dimension to Pakistan’s emerging green transport market.

Hydrogen produced through renewable-energy-powered electrolysis is often considered a potential low-carbon fuel pathway because the process can use electricity generated from renewable sources. However, its overall environmental benefits depend on factors including the source of electricity, hydrogen production efficiency, storage, compression and the vehicle’s actual performance.

Importantly, NIPPON’s stated range, hydrogen consumption, production rate, refuelling capability and booking figures are company claims and have not been independently verified. Real-world testing and technical certification would be necessary to establish the vehicle’s actual performance, safety and environmental impact.

If the technology proves commercially viable and performs as claimed, the NIPPON HEV concept could contribute to Pakistan’s growing conversation around clean mobility, renewable energy and the future of green transportation.
