WASHINGTON: Powerful storms and flooding have killed at least six people in Indiana, including a four-year-old boy, as severe weather battered parts of the US Midwest, Reuters reported.
The Indiana State Emergency Operations Center said the fatalities included three women and two men, in addition to the child.
Two deaths were reported in Delaware County, while Jennings, Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties each recorded one fatality, according to the emergency centre.
The severe weather system brought heavy rainfall, flooding and damaging winds across parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, disrupting communities and causing widespread power outages.
At one point, nearly one million utility customers were without electricity as the storms moved through the region.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun said President Donald Trump had told him that the state’s request for a presidential emergency declaration would be approved. Such a declaration would help unlock federal assistance for affected communities.
Emergency crews and local authorities continue to respond to flooding, assess damage and assist residents affected by the storms.
