ATHENS: Greece remained on high alert for wildfires on Sunday as authorities issued a Category 4, or “very high,” fire danger warning for several parts of the country amid strong northerly winds and dry weather conditions.
The warning covers Attica, including the island of Kythira; Viotia and Evia, including Skyros; the Cyclades islands; and Crete.
Under the Red Code alert, emergency personnel and firefighting equipment are being placed on full mobilisation. Local and regional authorities have also been instructed to activate emergency coordination mechanisms and remain prepared for potential forest fires.
According to the national weather service, skies were expected to remain mostly clear, while northerly winds of 6 to 7 on the Beaufort scale were forecast across the Aegean. Locally stronger winds were also expected in eastern Greece, although wind speeds were forecast to ease later on Sunday.
The combination of dry conditions, high temperatures and strong winds can significantly increase the risk of wildfires spreading rapidly, prompting authorities to maintain heightened preparedness across the affected regions.
Residents and visitors in high-risk areas are being urged to follow official instructions, avoid activities that could trigger fires and remain alert to emergency warnings.
