Karachi: Bank Alfalah, one of Pakistan’s leading commercial banks, has partnered with WWF-Pakistan to organise a mangrove plantation drive in Karachi under its Alfa Forest initiative, marking Pakistan’s Independence Day with a focus on environmental sustainability and coastal ecosystem restoration.
The plantation activity was held at the WWF-Pakistan Wetland Centre in Karachi and brought together Bank Alfalah employees, WWF-Pakistan representatives, environmental experts and volunteers. Participants planted mangroves as part of ongoing efforts to restore and protect Pakistan’s fragile coastal ecosystems.
The Alfa Forest initiative, available through the Alfa App, allows customers to contribute to tree plantation through their digital banking transactions. The latest plantation drive represents the next phase of the initiative, converting customer participation into tangible environmental action on the ground in partnership with WWF-Pakistan.
Bank Alfalah said the initiative reflects its commitment to responsible banking and nature-based solutions that can help address climate change, protect biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.
According to the bank, more than 1 million of its 1.4 million active Alfa App customers have participated in the initiative, enabling the plantation of a mangrove tree on their behalf.
Speaking at the event, Muhammad Yahya Khan, Chief Digital Officer, Bank Alfalah, said technology could serve as a powerful tool for creating positive environmental change.
He said the Alfa Forest initiative gives customers an opportunity to support conservation through everyday digital banking, while the partnership with WWF-Pakistan helps translate collective customer participation into practical environmental action.
Representing WWF-Pakistan, Rab Nawaz, Senior Director-Programmes, highlighted the importance of mangrove forests in protecting coastal ecosystems, capturing carbon, conserving biodiversity and supporting local livelihoods.
He appreciated Bank Alfalah’s commitment to environmental conservation and said the partnership would encourage wider public participation while generating long-term environmental benefits.
Pakistan’s mangrove forests are among the country’s most valuable natural ecosystems. They help protect coastal areas from erosion, provide habitat for marine biodiversity and serve as important carbon sinks, making their restoration particularly significant amid growing climate risks.
Through Alfa Forest, Bank Alfalah aims to contribute to Pakistan’s climate resilience while promoting greater environmental awareness among its customers, employees and communities.
The initiative is also part of the bank’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, highlighting its efforts to support sustainable development through partnerships, digital innovation and community engagement.
