ISLAMABAD, July 7: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide alert for the Jaglot-Skardu (JSR) Road, particularly the Skardu-Roundu section, warning of potential travel disruptions and safety risks from July 7 to 9 due to ongoing rainfall and unstable terrain.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), the prevailing weather conditions are in line with its earlier forecast, with continued rainfall and soil erosion increasing the likelihood of landslides across parts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The NEOC warned that localized landslides may occur over the next two days in and around Skardu, including Bromdo Nala, Chamcho, Malupa, and the Dambudas-Tormik-Haramosh section. Authorities also cautioned that erosion in local streams and the movement of mud and rock debris could further increase the risk to commuters.
The NDMA said the NEOC is continuously monitoring the situation, conducting hazard assessments, and ensuring the timely dissemination of information to relevant authorities for effective preparedness and response.
Travellers and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel on mountainous roads and landslide-prone routes during the alert period. Those who must travel are urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly near unstable slopes and vulnerable sections of the road.
The NDMA has directed local administrations to remain prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Citizens have also been encouraged to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for verified updates, weather advisories, and safety guidance.
