PMD Forecasts Rainfall Across Upper Catchments from 06 to 10 July 2026, No Major River Flooding Expected

Islamabad, 06 July 2026: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast an active weather system affecting northern parts of the country from 06 to 10 July 2026, bringing rain-wind/thunderstorms to the upper catchments of the major river systems.

According to the forecast, isolated rain-wind/thunderstorms are expected on 06 July over Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Potohar region and northeastern Punjab.

From 07 to 10 July, scattered rain-wind/thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls are likely over the upper catchments of the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers. The affected areas include Islamabad, Potohar, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab and northern Balochistan. The most widespread rainfall is expected on 07 July 2026.

River and Reservoir Situation:

The anticipated rainfall over the upper catchments is expected to cause a slight increase in inflows into Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs. River flows in the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are also expected to increase slightly during 07–10 July 2026.

At present, no significant river flooding is forecast. However, localized rises in hill torrents and smaller streams are expected in vulnerable areas following heavy rainfall.

Possible Impacts:

The forecast weather conditions may result in:

  • Localized flash flooding in vulnerable hill torrents and upper catchments.
  • Urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas during periods of intense rainfall.
  • Landslides and mudslides in mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Advisory:

All concerned federal and provincial authorities are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautionary measures to minimize the impact of localized flooding and rain-related hazards. Residents, tourists and travelers, particularly in mountainous and flood-prone areas, are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow the instructions issued by local authorities.

Pakistan Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the evolving weather situation and provide timely updates as necessary.
