Rubina Khalid calls for protection of mother languages to promote inclusion and national unity

ISLAMABAD — Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme, Rubina Khalid, has emphasized the importance of protecting mother languages, describing them as central to identity, culture and national cohesion.

In a message issued on International Mother Language Day, she said mother languages form the foundation of heritage and social belonging, and their preservation is critical for ensuring equal participation in society.

Rubina Khalid noted that linguistic diversity is one of Pakistan’s strengths and must be respected across all regions and communities. She said promoting education in the mother language helps children develop confidence, improve comprehension and secure better academic outcomes.

The BISP chairperson added that social protection programmes must be accessible to citizens in their own languages. She said the Benazir Income Support Programme is committed to inclusive communication so that beneficiaries from all backgrounds can fully understand and access available services.

She further stated that safeguarding linguistic diversity strengthens intergenerational ties and contributes to cultural harmony. According to her, sustainable development cannot be achieved without recognizing and valuing the role of mother languages in society.

International Mother Language Day is observed globally to raise awareness about linguistic diversity and encourage multilingual education.
