Apple Follows Google in Renaming Gulf of Mexico on Its Maps

After Google, Apple has also changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” on its online maps.

This change follows an official update by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, ordered by President Donald Trump.

While Google has updated its maps, the company stated that users in the U.S. will see “Gulf of America,” while those in Mexico will continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.” Others may see both names displayed.

The U.S. Geographic Names Information System officially updated the name on Sunday. Meanwhile, Microsoft has also altered the name on its Bing Maps.

However, the Associated Press, which provides global news coverage, will continue to refer to the body of water by its original name, “Gulf of Mexico,” as it has for the past 400 years, while also acknowledging the new designation.
