A new building in the Indian state of Gujarat has surpassed the Pentagon, becoming the world’s largest office building. The Surat Diamond Bourse, located in Surat, Gujarat, recently opened and spans 35 acres of land.
The 15-story building covers a total area of 6.7 million square feet, which is about 55,000 square feet larger than the U.S. Pentagon. The structure consists of nine rectangular buildings connected by a central corridor. Its purpose is to consolidate diamond cutting and trading operations in Surat.
Designed by Morphogenesis architects, the building follows modern and eco-friendly principles. It houses 4,700 offices and workshops and is equipped with 131 large elevators to ease movement across the vast complex.
Surat is known for producing 90% of the world’s cut diamonds, and this project aims to bring traders and craftsmen together in one location to further promote the global diamond and jewelry trade.
The construction of the building cost 32 billion Indian Rupees, and it can accommodate 65,000 workers. Additionally, it has parking space for 4,500 cars and over 10,000 motorcycles.
