The niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, and the UK’s 42-year-old Minister for Anti-Corruption, Tulip Siddiq, is facing corruption allegations. According to British media, Tulip Siddiq facilitated a deal between Bangladesh and Russia in 2013, which resulted in an increase in the cost of a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
In the ongoing investigations into corruption in Bangladesh, Siddiq’s family is accused of embezzling £3.9 billion. However, close sources to Tulip Siddiq have dismissed the corruption claims as false. They argue that the accusations are purely political, aimed at causing harm to her aunt, Sheikh Hasina Wajed.
Earlier this year, due to violent protests in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina fled to India. The new government in Bangladesh is conducting corruption investigations against the former ruling family, in which Tulip Siddiq’s name has emerged.
