Many single people believe that their friends become dull and unbearable after marriage, but is this belief really true? In reality, it holds some truth, as both men and women tend to undergo personality changes after marriage.
Experts have not yet fully answered whether marriage changes people or if individuals change themselves for marriage. However, research has shown that individuals who wish to spend their lives with a partner do experience personality changes.
This is understandable, as when two people’s lives are intertwined, their lifestyle and thoughts change significantly. Patience and tolerance are essential for a successful marriage; without them, it may fail.
A study in Germany observed the personality changes of around 15,000 people over four years. During this period, 664 people got married, allowing Munster University researchers to compare the personality changes of married individuals with others. The study found that married individuals showed a decline in traits like social interaction and the desire for new experiences.
While the difference between unmarried and married individuals was moderate, it suggested that married people may not be as social as they were before marriage. A 2000 study in the U.S. involving 2,000 middle-aged women over 6 to 9 years showed that women who married had less social interaction and were less inclined to seek new experiences compared to those who divorced.
