A new study has revealed that insulin resistance, a condition associated with prediabetes, increases the risk of common and serious heart valve diseases in individuals.
According to the research published in a journal, adults with insulin resistance are at higher risk of developing aortic stenosis (a condition where the aortic valve narrows, leading to reduced blood flow from the heart).
If left untreated, this condition can lead to heart failure and death.
Dr. Johanna Koskisto, a cardiologist at Kuopio University Hospital in Finland, stated in a news release that this discovery highlights insulin resistance as an important and modifiable factor in the development of aortic stenosis.
She added that since insulin resistance is common in Western populations, maintaining metabolic health could be a new way to reduce the risk of aortic stenosis and promote better heart health as people age.
