According to various media reports, the Indian armed forces are facing a rising number of suicides and mental health problems.
International media sources attribute these problems to political challenges and difficult working conditions. Factors cited include mental stress, harsh weather conditions, lack of vacation and long-term commitment.
According to Indian media reports:
- Approximately 40% of military personnel may suffer from mental health problems
- Around 15% of soldiers reportedly use alcohol to cope with stress
The report, covering the years 2010–2019, said 1,113 Indian military personnel committed suicide, including 895 from the Army, 185 from the Air Force and 32 from the Navy.
Kashmir Media Service reports that 11,224 cases of sexual violence against Kashmiri women have been reported from 1989 to 2020.
These issues fuel broader discussions about military policy and conditions in the region.
