If the idea of building a railroad on the moon sounds like something out of a science fiction book, you’re not alone.
However, NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts Program has provided additional funding for six “fantasy concepts,” including a lunar rover.
A magnetic robotic lift will be used by Flexible Levitation, or FLOAT, to deliver up to 100 tons of supplies to the surface of the Moon each day.
The team behind the concept, Scalextric, says it will provide a reliable and independent method for monthly releases.
“We want to build the first lunar rail system that will provide a safe, autonomous and efficient cargo transport vehicle on the moon,” Dr Shaler said in a NASA blog post.
This lunar transportation system will not use the tracks you know on Earth’s railroads.
The idea forwarded by Dr. Shaler and his colleagues are creating a flexible track segment “unobservable” directly on the surface of the moon.
This line is intended to shorten the construction time, because it can be easily rolled up and moved when the base of the moon changes.
Some “power magnet robots” will move realistically as they travel along the track.
This is the rail, not the vehicle itself, like the floating Scalextric track.
According to Dr. Shaler, each robot can move at a speed of about 1 mile (1.61 km per hour) while carrying loads of various sizes and shapes.
Unlike robots with wheels or legs, these floating vehicles will not wear out their tracks in the dusty lunar environment.
Although the concept of a lunar base seems unrealistic at the moment, the possibility of permanent habitation on the Moon is a growing concern.
NASA investigated and eventually approached the Moon’s South Pole as part of the Artemis mission. Moon craters are thought to contain ice.
NASA, crew. Although he delayed the moon landing, he wanted to create a man on the moon.
Jim Free, NASA’s assistant administrator for the development of exploration systems, told reporters that some campsites are likely to be part of the Artemis landing.
As a result, NASA and competing space agencies such as China and Russia may try to build a long-term lunar settlement.
