A 132-year-old message in a bottle has been discovered during an inspection of a 209-year-old lighthouse in Scotland.
Mechanical engineer Ross Russell, from the Northern Lighthouse Board, found the hidden bottle while removing panels from a cupboard inside the Corsewell Lighthouse.
Russell and his team used a rope and broom handle to extract the bottle, and along with lighthouse caretaker Barry Miller, they attempted to open it. The team said the cork was stuck in place, so they had to carefully use a drill to remove it.
Barry Miller jokingly said, “We all promised that if it was a treasure map, we would stay silent.”
Inside the bottle, a note dated September 4, 1892, was found, listing the names of three engineers who had installed the light on the 100-foot-tall lighthouse, along with the names of three lighthouse keepers.
